Prompt: And now, on to our Trifextra. We want you to choose one of the pictures below and give us a 33-word response to it. Your responses will be judged by the community this weekend.
I have had such a horrible week that I completely forgot about the word limit for Trifecta this past week. It was in the back of my mind, but since I usually write when I'm half asleep, and since the story was going so perfectly, I called it a night when I was able to get it under 500. In the light of day, I am glad, for the story's sake. However, I will endeavor to remember the rules in the future. I will even write them down on a post-it and place it on my monitor, where it will stay until the cat eats it.
This one's for you, Grandpa.
My grandfather's pride,
Which once turned the rich, raw earth
Now sits on fallow ground,
Sadly covered in dust.
Time passes.
Old must make way for the New
Yesterday's strongest steel becomes rust.

That last line cuts to the bone. How true. Well done!
ReplyDeleteVery well done. A bittersweet description.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteChange. So much is said on so many levels in your poem. Very well-done, as usual.
ReplyDeleteOn a separate note, congrats on your "almost" third place standing in the last challenge. :) It was well-deserved recognition for fine work.
Thank you!
DeleteYesterday's strongest steel becomes rust... fabulous line! And I love the inference here, the relationship, the remembrance, the connections between you and he. Those live on.
ReplyDeleteThis is true. Thank you for reading!
DeleteThis was a bittersweet way to think about change. Sometimes it's welcome, needed and other times you're not ready for it and don't want it. Loved the last line (AND your last entry which I didn't even realize was long because I was so engaged in the story). Nicely done here!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI didn't realize it was too long until after I linked it as the third place piece. :-)
DeleteMemories last longer than steel (:
ReplyDeleteThis is true!
DeleteIt might become rust, but that rust is beautiful as are our memories of our once strong ancestors. By the way - I loved your spider piece!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Writing down my memories will help me share them with future generations.
DeleteChange can be sad, when we see what is strong become weakened. At least the memories of the good days stay with us!
ReplyDeleteI have some happy memories of my grandpa and his tractor!
DeleteBeautiful memories! hold them close at heart.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I will!
Deleteyour grandpa would have been touched. :)
ReplyDeleteand, my first rendition went much longer than the required 33 words, also. I had to do some deep cutting myself. :)
Thank you. I think he would have been tickled.
DeleteOut with the old, in with the new, cutting a bit too close to home lately!
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Thank you for reading.
DeleteVery good. I'm sure your grandfather would have been blessed by this. :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Cheryl
And that is the story of life.
ReplyDeleteVery true. Thank you for reading!
DeleteVery poignant way of portraying this photo. "Strongest steel...becomes rust" perfectly coveys your point.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think that my grandfather lost his strength when he was unable to farm anymore. That thought was in my head while I wrote this.
DeleteEverything goes the way of the dodo sooner or later, no matter how strong it might seem. We have to have endings for new beginnings to exist :)
ReplyDeleteI know, I know. I always want to hug the memories close, anyway.
DeleteSad but beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteProfound sentiment in 33 words. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
